Originally introduced in 1193 by Doge Enrico Dandolo, the first high volume mintage of the Venetian Silver Grosso occurred in 1202, to gather supplies and fund the procurement of ships to transport crusaders to the Fourth Crusade. Design of the coin features a heavy Byzantine influence, depicting Christ in a manner that clearly mimics the Byzantine gold histamenons minted in Constantinople two centuries earlier. Struck from .985 fine silver measuring 19-22 mm in diameter, this Grosso was minted 1268-1413.
Intricate Design of the Venetian Grosso
The ruling Doge appears on the obverse, beside the image of the patron of Venice, Saint Mark the Evangelist. Inscriptions include "S. M. VENETI" (Saint Mark of Venice), along with the Doge's name and title.
An enthroned Christ, in Byzantine style, adorns the reverse. Inscribed "IC IX" or "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA."

Non-Bullion Items: 30-Day Return Policy

If the product has been altered, is not in its original coin capsule, or is otherwise in an unsaleable condition, the product will not be accepted for return or exchange. All documents and bonus items included with the product must also be returned. If the product is not returned with all original packaging and bonus items, is incomplete, or is returned after the 30-day return period, the Company reserves the right not to accept the return or to accept the return subject to a 20% restocking fee, in the Company's sole discretion. All returns with a purchase price over 0 must include a Return Authorization Number. This number can be obtained from our Customer Service Department by calling toll-free at 1-800-362-9004 during Customer Service hours.
Refunds of non-bullion items are for the cost of product only; shipping and handling charges are not refundable, unless otherwise stated by Company.
